Drainage in Newcastle

Blocked Stormwater Drains Newcastle

Stormwater backing up into a yard, garage or ground-floor unit is a drainage job you want done properly the first time. We clear blocked stormwater lines across Newcastle and route every job back through the full drainage service range, so the cause gets fixed, not just the symptom.

Why stormwater lines block in this city

The old city centre's stormwater network was built for a different place. Most of the ground between the beach and the harbour is paving, roofs and concrete, so heavy subtropical downpours dump enormous volumes into a system with nowhere to spread.

Two things make it worse here:

  • Original stormwater runs under the old CBD are frequently early clay pipework, which cracks, joint-separates and lets tree roots in
  • Low reclaimed land along the Honeysuckle foreshore and harbour edge sits on a high water table, so surcharged drains have less room to discharge

Around 1,141 mm of rain falls here in an average year, and most of it arrives in short, heavy coastal bursts rather than steady drizzle. A stormwater line carrying even a partial blockage copes fine on a dry week, then floods a carport the first time a summer storm hits.

The upside of a predictable pattern. Because the triggers are known, the fix usually is too. Clear the blockage, check what the pipe wall looks like, and deal with the cracked section or the root source before the next downpour finds it for you.

Signs the stormwater line is the problem

Sewer and stormwater blockages feel similar from inside the house. Outside, they look nothing alike.

  • Water pooling around grate pits, driveway channels or yard drains during rain
  • Downpipes overflowing at the base or backing up at the shoe
  • A pit that fills faster than the water level drops once the rain eases
  • Damp patches or erosion along the line's route through the yard
  • Gully overflow that only happens when it rains, never when the washing machine runs

If sewage smells come with any of that, the sewer is involved and the picture changes. That is its own job with its own page, and we will steer you to the right team once we know which line we're dealing with.

How we clear a blocked stormwater line

Every job starts the same way: find the blockage, pick the method that suits it, then prove the line runs before we leave.

Clear it with the right gear

A rod punched through a root mat gets water moving today and the blockage back next storm. High-pressure jetting strips roots and silt off the pipe wall instead.

Check what the camera shows

Where a line has a history of blocking, we run CCTV down after clearing. You see the cracks, offsets or root intrusion on screen before deciding on any repair.

Fix the underlying cause

A cracked clay section or a root-heavy junction keeps blocking until it is dealt with. We quote the repair, replace or reroute the failed section, and leave the line sound.

Prove the flow

Before we pack up, we run water through the line and watch it discharge. A stormwater drain that flows clean at handover is the only finish worth charging for.

The process, start to finish

  1. 1

    Call and tell us

Ring (02) 4063 3461 and tell us what's going on in Newcastle. We'll ask a few quick questions so the right gear is on the truck the first time.

  2. 2

    Quote before work

You get the price before anything starts. No call-out fee, no hourly surprises. You approve the quote or we shake hands and leave, no charge.

  3. 3

    Clear, check and prove

We jet or rod the line by what the blockage needs, camera-check anything that looks like a repeat offender, and run water through to confirm the flow before we call it done.

  4. 4

    Backed, no questions asked

If something isn't up to standard afterwards, we come back and make it right, no questions asked. That's the standard every Newcastle job is held to.

What the job costs

No two blocked stormwater lines cost the same to clear, so we don't pretend they do. What you get is the call out at $0 and a firm quote before a tool comes out.

Factors that move the figure:

  • Depth and length of the run, and how far the blockage sits in it
  • Whether jetting clears it or a cracked section needs replacement
  • Access, which varies a lot between a yard pit and a strata property's common drainage
  • What the camera finds once the water is moving again

None of that is a surprise to you. It's on the quote, and you approve it first.

Made Right, No Questions Asked

If something isn't up to standard, we come back and make it right. No arguing, no fine print.

Stormwater has a habit of failing at the worst moment, and knowing the next visit costs nothing to start makes that call easier to make.

Around the city centre

This page covers the old CBD itself, from the harbour edge through to the steep ground near The Hill, where elevated blocks shed water fast and the low foreshore takes the runoff.

If you're on the same run in one of the suburbs around the city centre, the drainage hub lists everything we handle and the contact page gets you booked in.

Blocked stormwater questions

How do I know it's the stormwater line and not the sewer?

Sewer backups come with smells and usually show at the toilet or laundry. A blocked stormwater line shows up outside, at grates, downpipes and pits, especially during or right after rain.

Can I clear a stormwater blockage myself?

Lifting leaves off a grate is worth doing. Rodding deeper usually shifts the blockage a few metres without fixing the cause, and in clay pipework that ends in a repeat callout.

Will you check the line after you clear it?

Yes. Where the line's history warrants it, we run a CCTV camera down after clearing so you can see the pipe wall, any cracks and whether roots will come back.

What happens if the stormwater line is cracked or broken?

We give you the camera footage and a quote for the repair before anything starts. Cracked clay sections get replaced or rerouted, and you approve the figure first.

Do you handle stormwater in apartment buildings and strata?

We do. With most local dwellings being apartments at the last census, a lot of our stormwater work means coordinating access through building managers and keeping common property drainage flowing.

Do you come out when it's actively flooding?

Call us and we'll talk you through what to do straight away. Same-day service runs where the schedule allows, and a flooding stormwater line gets treated as a priority job.

Book the clear-out

Call (02) 4063 3461 and tell us what's happening. $0 call out across Newcastle, a clear quote before any work starts, and a job that gets made right if it isn't right the first time.

If the line needs a closer look rather than a clear, the CCTV drain inspection page explains what the camera finds, and hydro jetting explains the gear behind a proper clean. The blocked drains page covers the general household side of drainage work.
